It was mentioned this morning, on the Team 1260, that ESPN reported that Phaneuf has requested a trade. I could not find any evidence of this but let's assume that the request was made. From an Oilers perspective, if in fact Visnovsky and Souray might be shopped, this is not good news. Take into account that it is likely that Neidermayer will be on the block, you will now potentially have at least 4 high quality D-man being shopped.
Now back to Phaneuf, considering it is his thread, likely destinations for Phaneuf?

But, seriously, I have no idea. He's very overrated and I wouldn't give much for the guy. And, really, his cap hit is uber bucks (6.5 million for another 4 seasons after this one!). He's like a Horcoff for the cows. Anyone who takes him is ultra stupid to do so. But I have a bad feeling that someone will bail out the cows.

I thought players were lining up to play in Calgary? Good news if he's off a division rival, but I kind of like all that cap space tied up for Calgary. I guess I can waste some time anyway. Whether there's any validity to this, and depending how big of a gambler Sutter is, I think Phaneuf could virtually go to any team sitting below the $54M cap range that need a franchise dman, since most teams above that have big money franchise guys already. It would all depend what Sutter wants back. Does he want to restock the cupboard or risk it all for a Stanely Cup run with a UFA all-star. NJD 54.824 - Don't know what Calgary would want, if anything STL 53.815 - Kariya is a $6M UFA bum for a cup run Calgary probably doesn't want but who knows, St. Louis would love a franchise dman, possible scenario deal linked to Calgary's playoff success LAK 53.273 - May want a franchise Dman with Doughty making less than a $1M for another season yet, they've got a lot of prospects ATL 52.565 - Kovalchuk for a high risk gamble cup run, possible scenario deal linked to Calgary's playoff success COL 51.899 - division rival unlikely, but I'm sure Colorado would be interested with Foote most likely retiring or being washed up TBL 51.863 - Lots of UFA's so hard to tell, they have lots of stars and little success already CLB 49.829 - All over it faster than Hitchcock on a pizza DAL 49.701 - Don't know what Calgary would want, if anything NAS 44.437 - Don't know what Calgary would want, if anything (possibly a goalie?) NYI 44.273 - Tons of cap space and interest in any and everything probably PHX 42.394 - Is this team even allowed to do anything?

I haven't heard the rumour anywhere and I lurk calgarypuck, which would be all over this.
But I'll play along...He becomes redundant now that they have Bouwmeester. I'm not sure what the Flames would want back- probably a solid #4 dman and a top 6 winger for thier run. They don't really need to be worried about salary, even through Bourque will command a hefty raise, I doubt they re-sign Jokinen (if they did it won't be for 5.25 million). Two guys each making about 3 million would be a good deal, I think. Each side could flesh it out with picks/prospects.
Sutter sends him east.
I could see potential in Florida and Carolina. I don't think Tampa's owners would take on that salary. I don't see Atlanta in it as pick up Phaneuf would be done to convince Kovy to sign. If they're not trading Kovy they don't have the assets for a deal. No dice in Washington or Pittsburg, nor in Boston or Philly. Is there a deal with Montreal or Toronto to be made? I could see the Islanders in on this. The Rangers would like to be in on it but the most excellent signings of Wade Redden and Michal Roszival prevent that (oh god, please send Phanuef to New York for Wade Redden).
He's overrated, but there's definately deals to be had.

I was reading some amusing comments on TSN after Calgary's 9-1 loss to SJ earlier this week. Seems like lots of Phlegms fans actually do want Phaneuf gone.

Isn't Phaneuf with Elisa Cuthbert? Maybe he wants to be closer to Hollywood.

It's too bad for her. She's a nice looking girl. But I guess she wants to be around idiots like Avery and Phaneuf and gain a reputation.

I lurk a flames board (it's okay, I shower and sanitize immediately after) and things are getting funny. For many, the love affairs with Phaneuf, Regehr and Sarich are over. Haven't seen too many "thank god we have Sutter" comments lately.
