www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/juniors/2009/11/04/ohl_liambis_suspensionAnyone think that this was an over-reaction to the hit? Granted that Fanelli got injured bad but this wasn't Fanelli having his back turned all the while Liambas was targeting him. Fanelli turned to show his back just before the hit and left himself wide open just as Liambas was ready to hit him.

Branch is famous for going overboard on suspensions. Whether it is bowing to media pressure, knee jerk reaction to the injury, or not wanting to give the NCAA fodder no one knows.
15 to 20 games would have been more then sufficient IMHO.

I didn't think it was that bad of a hit. Even on TSN they were saying he stopped skating way before he went in for the hit. Entire season + playoffs is too harsh a suspension. You get less for baseballing a guy with your stick.

Too harsh. To be honest, I'm not even sure that I have a problem with the hit. He started his approach at the circle (if I remember correctly) and went in on the forecheck. He finished his check (as he should). I didn't see an elbow and I don't think his feet left the ice. I don't even think this hit was dirty.
What made it bad was the defensman turning at the last second. There's no way for the hitter to not hit him at that point in time. He turned and that motion, combined with the hit, put him face first into the boards.
I hate putting the victim in this at fault situation, but I believe that a large part of this is true.

I agree Copper. The D-man turned, he finished his check and someone ended up getting hurt. Liambas had priors but in this case he is the scapegoat and its unfortunate that someone has to be the example.

I like it more that there is less obstruction (less blatant obstruction) but as some said this is getting the dmen into trouble. I don't want to see that disappear, but maybe they look at getting rid of the trapezoid as some have suggested (although I don't think that would have helped this either).
I'm fully on board with scaling down the equipment as well.

I think it's equipment when you see old retiree's from the past 10 years (Barnaby on TSN most recently comes to mind) talking about getting laughed at in the dressing room for still wearing the old beat up leather shoulder pads. Key word though...padding. It pads you and the other guy, like a boxing glove. Don Cherry has stated the pads are more like body armour, comparing them to the leathers numerous times on Coach's Corner. Boxing glove to the head or body armour. Today's NHL is body armour and it's a "legal" hit.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Michael Liambas is resuming his hockey career. The ex-Erie Otters forward signed with the IHL's Bloomington PrairieThunder on Thursday, nearly a month after being suspended from the OHL for the rest of the season and playoffs for a hit that left his opponent with serious head injuries. Liambis, 20, was assessed a match penalty for boarding after his hit on Ben Fanelli of the Kitchener Rangers in a game Oct. 30. Fanelli's helmet flew off and he fell unconscious to the ice before he was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. He was later airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with skull and facial fractures. Liambis, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, is expected to join the PrairieThunder for their Dec. 11 game against the Flint Generals. The five-foot-nine, 200-pound winger played eight games with Bloomington last season, recording one assist and 31 penalty minutes. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=300925

Good for Liambas. He got shafted by David Branch. Something I saw on HF was maybe Branch did it to avoid any lawsuits against the league, the rink and the helmet manufacturers.

Muskegon Lumberjack defenseman Jason Lawmaster underwent surgery late Tuesday night at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. Lawmaster suffered a ruptured spleen early in Tuesday night's game against the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. Lawmaster was hit from behind by Prairie Thunder player Mike Liambas. Lumberjack broadcaster Terry Ficorelli said Lawmaster underwent successful surgery to have his spleen removed and he will remain hospitalized for 2-3 more days. Lawmaster had extensive internal bleeding, Ficorelli said. Liambas was not penalized for the hit, but the Lumberjacks are expected to submit the videotape of the game to the league office for review. Lawmaster is expected to miss at least two months, however, Ficorelli said there is also the possibility he would remained sidelined for remainder of the season. www.mlive.com/lumberjacks/index.ssf/2009/12/muskegon_lumberjack_jason_lawm.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+muskegon_lumberjacks+%28Muskegon+Lumberjacks+-+MLive.com%29

That won't help Liambas' position. I guess now that any potential lawsuits against the OHL, CHL, the rink and the helmet people will be moot as they can now point to this incident.

I can't say how bad the hit on Lawmaster was as I haven't seen it. If it was a total blindside hit, then I'd have to retract what I said about Liambas getting the shaft. Not that I have any love for David Branch, though.
