From what I understand (I hope I'm wrong on this), they extinguished the torch to take it down the bobsled rink in Cowtown. Then relit it with a match or something.
After all the hassle of getting the same flame from Greece, they extinguish it so they can take it on the fucking bobsled. What a joke. I'm a little bit disgusted.

I don't see that story. I see a story about American teens carrying the tourch through Calgary

Yeah the story is about non-Canadians carrying the torch, which is BS. Apparently one of the Americans called it the "United States torch flame."
The second post there is somewhat related to the story in the torch aspect. I just didn't feel like making a separate thread for it.

Oh ok. That is Coca Cola got to choose the torch carriers. That is what happens when you have corporations involved. I lost feelings years ago. like anything else, it was ruined by corporations. My thoughts. The torch should only be carried by citizens of the country the torch travels through, but what do I know.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if other countries had done it as well. But, I wonder, why Calgary? I know they probably have the largest population of Americans in Canada, so I wonder if that was the reason. There was one comment about Calgary students running in Taber instead of having some area people doing it. It's just that there's a lot of people that wanted to be part of it, especially ones who have contributed to their community. I'd feel the same way if there were Canadians running in a US torch run instead of someone locally. I feel sorry for the students, though. I doubt any of them have any idea what they're involved in. It's just a bad PR move for Coke.

I got a kick out of the one girl who called it the US torch run. Really? You don't even realize the Olympics are in Canada?
It's just sad.

That's what I mean. They probably don't know what's going on. Just go to some place, take the torch, run with it and give it to someone else.

Gotcha. It's too bad. Like the comments on the article stated, there were plenty of Canadians who wanted to be torch bearers, but got the boot for these American kids. I think there were a few Brits too. I've got nothing against Americans, or Brits for that matter, but like Stephen said, the torch relay should be reserved for the citizens of the host country. Could you even imagine the uproar if Canadians were to carry the torch in the States?
Good job VANOC. Allowing an American company to choose torch bearers. Next thing you know they will allow the Hindi translation of O Canada to be played at the Olympics.

They said that "Eddie the Eagle" had the torch in Winnipeg. that's another reason why I think it was done in Calgary. The 1988 Olympis were almost like the Special Olympics, where anyone could participate. Remember the Jamaican bobsled team? There may have been a cross-country skier from some country that has no snow. I think he finished so dead last that he was shown on whoever had the US broadcast that year.

Now, I'm not saying that only canadian citizens should only have run with the torch. If someone from another country, but has roots in some place in Canada, did it, I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

I remember that Terry, he was from Mexico I believe. I think the torch, whatever country the touch is, citizens from that country should carry the touch. The torch started in Greece the tourch should be carried by the Greeks then whatever country the torch enters those citizens get the relay and relay that to the next country's citizens. Coke messed up big time and I agree with you Terry if these Americans had a famous relative tied to the community I would believe that was acceptable.

Well, I shouldn't get too worked up over this. It's more for the people when it passes by. having someone they know getting some recognition. It'd be the same as having people from the east coast carrying through Saskatchewan. No one knows the person carrying it and it'd be like just having paid runners doing stretches like 5 miles everyday or two.
