... to be represented by his Mom. CBC.caHockey phenom John Tavares fires agent: report Junior hockey phenom John Tavares has fired his agent and will now be represented by his mother, the Toronto Star reported in Tuesday's edition. According to the Star, Tavares, expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft, has severed ties to player agent Bryan Deasley. Tavares had 40 goals and 78 assists for 118 points in 59 games for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League this season. Tavares's mother, Barbara, will be handling things for her son for the immediate future. "We're looking in a new direction," Barbara Tavares told the Star. "I worked in a number of different departments in the banking system. "I have pretty good experience in that area and when you run your own business [she and husband Joe run a business in the steel industry], you do whatever is necessary." Barbara Tavares said the family doesn't need an agent at this time because "right now, there's nothing to handle. We're really not in much of a rush." Deasley declined to comment.

I'm not familiar with Bryan Deasley, and I'm not sure iff it was him who wanted Taveras to play for the Marlies this season. So, I hope it's a good move and not something like Lindros being run by his family.

Representing yourself or being represented can be kind of a double-edged sword. You can end up with a situation like Lindros, or Ovechkin - things seem to have worked out pretty well for him.
