EDMONTON -- The owner of the Edmonton Oilers says he doesn't know what comes next after city councillors rejected his last-minute demands for millions more taxpayer dollars and walked away from a deal for a new downtown arena.
In a two-sentence press release, Daryl Katz says he is concerned about the implications of the deal effectively collapsing, but remains hopeful they can reach a solution.
Construction was set to begin next year on a new downtown rink. It would be built by the city while the Oilers would run it, pay a lease fee and keep almost all the profits.
That deal went into limbo last month when Katz said he'd had another look at the numbers and needed, among other concessions, $6 million more a year from taxpayers.
Mayor Stephen Mandel said the deal collapsed because Katz would not budge from his demands and would not provide the financial details to prove the extra $6 million was needed for him to turn a profit.
Mandel has said the only way the process can move forward is for Katz or his officials to meet with council in public to explain why they need the money.

I am getting so sick of this shit. The city gave Katz more than a months notice to come to a city hall meeting. He makes a statement the day before that nobody from his camp will attend and the city has no choice but to through his proposal out. This guy is way too shady. The Oilers were like 8th on the list of profitable teams last season and he even refuses to back his "bleeding money" claims up with financial statements. I almost hope he moves the team so I never have to waste time watching NHL hockey again in my life. This arena bullshit combined with the lockout has just become too ridiculous. People are getting on with their lives and finding other things to do. The league is kidding themselves if they think fans are just gonna come running back.

I don't think the lockout is ending anytime soon so this maybe no worry. I am sick of the lockout. Both sides crying about millions and there are tons of people in the New York area still have no power

I sure hope it doesn't end. I've lost all interest. Now that I am back in Edmonton with my dream job, most of the people I have talked to feel the same. It was hard suffering through these slim year but I honestly don't give a fuck. I cancelled my cable cause TV sux, internet only, no phone either. Fuck the world and and fuck the NHL man. Gave my glove to some homeless dude picking bottles as I was filling up the other day, but fuck the rest of em. And fuck anyone named Stephen.
