General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Nick Schultz from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenceman Tom Gilbert.
Schultz, 29, has spent all 10 National Hockey League seasons with the Wild and has accumulated 128 points (26G, 102A) and 322 penalty minutes in 743 games. The 6’1”, 200-pound rearguard has a goal and two assists with 30 penalty minutes in 62 games this season. Schultz, who hails from Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, played three seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Prince Albert Raiders. In 189 games he had 114 points (33G, 81A) and 195 penalty minutes. Internationally Schultz represented Team Canada at the 2004 and 2007 World Hockey Championships, where he helped Canada win gold at both events. He was also a member of the silver medal winning team at the 2002 World Junior Hockey Championship. Schultz was selected by Minnesota in the 2nd round, 33rd overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

WOOHOO!!
All I can say is about fuckin' time. I've wanted him gone for at least 3 years...probably 4. This is more reason to celebrate than New Years!! No more brutal giveaways, weak ass retreating with the puck into your own end, and looking in your skates for the puck as you do a ballerina spin move while losing it to the opposition.
Good riddance. I'm sure they have tried before, but nobody would take his contract until now.
What makes it even sweeter were comments on HF Boards about people not happy about it. I swear they only let you join there if you're between half and full retard.
WOOOOO!!! SO HAPPY TODAY MAN!! YEAAAAAAAAHHHH!!! Adios Tammy Gilberta!

I like this deal too. Gilbert was frustrating. I think he played better last year but he is too inconsistent.

Gilbert was likely having one of his best seasons as an Oiler, but I just looked up his career stats vs. Schultz.
Gilbert is a career -29 and Schultz is a career +8.
I'll take Schultz, thank you.

Shultz's plus/minus looks pretty neat considering that the Wild have historically been, well, not that good. This team really needed actual defence, so I like this trade. Getting rid of a source of numerous giveaways is a bonus.

As much as I did dislike Gilbert, I will admit he was playing some of his best hockey this year. He started off this season looking brutal just like last year, but was playing a lot better before he got injured from the Carcillo hit.
Now if only Horcoff can stop whiffing on empty net shot opportunities, but that's a story for another day.....
