PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers acquired Swedish defenceman Nicklas Grossman from the Dallas Stars on Thursday for a 2012 second-round pick and a 2013 third-round pick.
The 27-year-old Grossman, six-foot-four and 230 pounds, has five assists in 52 games this season. He has three goals and 41 points in 333 career NHL games, all with the Stars.
"He is experienced. He is a bigger body and he is a good solid defensive defenceman," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "He can kill penalties for us and play regular shifts. He can chew up minutes."
Grossman is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
"Nick being the player that he is, he's been a sought-after guy for a lot of teams," Dallas general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. "It just kind of came together with Philadelphia over the last few days. We wish him luck. It's a good fit for him."
The NHL trade deadline is Feb. 27.
"This isn't an indication we're going to be sellers," Nieuwendyk said. "This is an indication we're going to be active. ... We're trying to build something here that's not only a good product today but, more importantly, we want to contend for Cups like the Detroit's, like the San Jose's, not just bordering on the seven-through-12 area. We want to be a consistent team."
