The Oklahoma City Barons ended the power play drought and added three even strength goals and an empty net goal to down the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-2 Wednesday evening at the Cox Convention Center. With the win, the Barons (2-2-0-0) even the North Division Semi-Final against the Bulldogs (2-2-0-0) at 2-2.
Hunter Tremblay scored his first goal as a Baron just 3:06 into the game. Tremblay’s unassisted tally came following a Hamilton turnover behind the net. Tremblay made his presence felt early in the game by not only getting two more shots on goal but by throwing a solid hit against Hamilton’s Dustin Boyd, pushing him into the bench area.
Hamilton added the equalizer at the 10:29 mark of the period when Ian Schultz got a Nigel Dawes rebound off the post to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams combined for 19 shots on goal in the first period with Hamilton having an 11-8 edge at the intermission.
Oklahoma City brought the offensive pressure to start the period and, at the 5:40 mark, the persistence paid off. Ryan O’Marra blasted a shot and Zach Stortini got the rebound behind Bulldogs goaltender Drew MacIntyre to give the Barons the lead at 2-1.
Hamilton responded to even the score at 13:50 as Paul Zanette got the puck past Martin Gerber. After the Barons led in shots on goal at 5-2 in the period following the Stortini goal, Hamilton controlled the puck for the latter half of the second, taking a lead on shots on goal, but a late holding penalty to Hamilton’s Kyle Klubertanz gave Oklahoma City the power play advantage with less than two minutes remaining.
Prior to the power play opportunity, the Barons were 0-for-16 with the man advantage but Mark Arcobello ended that drought with his first goal of the postseason to give the Barons a 3-2 lead at the second intermission.
Oklahoma City added an insurance goal at the 11:26 mark of the third period as Linus Omark got the puck past MacIntyre to push the advantage to 4-2. Arcobello was credited with the secondary assist on the goal, giving him his second point of the night.
Chris VandeVelde added an empty netter at 19:20 to secure a 5-2 win for Oklahoma City and even the series.
Game five of the North Division Semi-Final is Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. CT at the Cox Convention Center. Game six is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT Sunday, April 24 at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario.
