(9-9 in 2009 - 3rd in West Division - Lost in West Semi-Final)
General Manager: Danny Maciocia | Head Coach: Richie Hall
Offensive Coordinator: Kevin Strasser | Defensive Coordinator: Richie Hall
Key Addition: WR Kelly Campbell - One year after leaving for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the speedy receiver is back and should form a dynamic duo with Fred Stamps, much to the delight of Ricky Ray.
Other Signings and Acquisitions: WR Brad Smith, SB Andre Talbot, LB Javier Glatt, DB Chris Thompson, DB Lenny Walls, DB Lawrence Gordon
Key Deletion: RB Jesse Lumsden - The injury bug bit Lumsden in the first game last season, which led to the emergence of Arkee Whitlock. The running game should be okay but ratio-busters are hard to come by.
Other Releases and Deletions: WR Maurice Mann, OL John Comiskey, DC Jim Daley, DT Eric Taylor, DT Jerome Haywood, LB Reggie Hunt, DB Byron Parker, DB Kelly Malveaux, S Scott Gordon, DB Lenny Williams, DB Anthony Malbrough
Matt Dunigan's Quarterback Analysis: Edmonton is rock solid with Ricky Ray (Sacramento State) back at the helm with gritty and gutsy veteran, Jason Maas (Oregon) in relief and Jared Zabransky (Boise State) pushing hard for that role. Floyd Haigler (Howard) better be prepared to head to the developmental squad as he is in tough with the Eskimo talent in front of him.
Duane Forde's Canadian Content: The key word in assessing the state of the Eskimos' Canadian content is 'if'. They'll be considered one of the team's strengths 'if' slotback Kamau Peterson regains his 2008 Most Outstanding Canadian form after seeing his production drop by about 40% in ’09. And 'if' Calvin McCarty, who led all CFL running backs with 70 catches in 2008, can shake the injuries that limited him to just 20 receptions last season. And 'if' defensive lineman Adam Braidwood is truly 100% after missing the entire 2008 and 2009 seasons due to injury. And 'if' linebacker Javy Glatt is able to contribute regularly on defence and prove that the B.C. Lions were wrong to let him go. And 'if' receiver Andre Talbot, acquired from Toronto in an offseason trade, can rebound from an injury-riddled '09 to approach the 915 receiving yards he posted a year earlier. And 'if' one of youngsters Elliott Richardson and Saleem Borhot can adequately replace the retired Scott Gordon at safety. The most notable homegrown departures of the offseason were Gordon, running back Jesse Lumsden, and centre John Comiskey, all of whom were non-factors last season as a result of long-term injuries.
Chris Schultz's Overview: For head coach Richie Hall, last year was a success. Not a major success but a mild one. At least the Eskimos played a playoff game which is a much greater accomplishment than the two other rookie head coaches, Bart Andrus in Toronto and Mike Kelly in Winnipeg, both of whom lost their jobs. The second year will be better because it is always easier to experience something the second time and be effective than the first time and be reactive. I also think it is a smart move for Hall to be a hands-on coach as a coordinator as well as a head coach. More...
What Should Improve: Pass Defence - Richie Hall is taking over the reigns on defence and, with one year under his belt in Edmonton, his schemes should make a difference on the field. With all the changes, it may take some time but there should be improvement.
What Could Decline: Richie Hall's Focus - There is a reason why not many coaches do double duty in professional football. Every minute devoted to the defence is a minute taken away from offence and special teams.
Coach Hall Says... "You always try to do whatever you can to upgrade your football team. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. If you're not trying, you're not looking to improve." - Edmonton Journal
