I wonder if anyone wants to get Kovy if he's rumoured to go back to Russia next season. I think Atlanta wants too much for him and will either have to wait until the deadline and take whatever he can get or get nothing for him.

The Thrashers are asking for a lot (1st liner, top 4 D, and a pick or prospect) and Kovalchuk is asking for a lot (league max. $11.2M per year or $120M long term) according to Mackenzie's article at TSN. I think teams are gonna be less eager to keep jumping all over these 10 years deals. He's an awesome goal scorer and rare breed of player, but 20% of the payroll in one guy is just fuckin' ridiculous. It's amazing to me that Pittsburgh has been able to keep it going this long with both Malkin and Crosby at $8.7M cap hits.

I say LA if anywhere, they have the cap room or...Phoenix. Yes I know Phoenix. I can see him landing there to help them for their cup run. As for The Pens. Sometimes winning tones down people's demands on contracts.

Waddell looks to have bailed. No one stands out for the players from the Devils and, unless he uses the Devils first rounder to trade for someone else, those picks may not get too much. And, just watching SNet, the panel also said that Waddell jumped too early, considering that the trade deadline isn't for another month.

I agree with the panel. Waddell basically had another month to deal Kovy. The names going back to Atlanta are no-names basically. The picks are decent but they arent going to be top 10 or anything like that. Make me wonder if perhaps the Devils will field calls closer to the deadline and perhaps get a kings ransom.

After reading about the contract he turned down and why, I think a team would be foolish to go after this guy. He's obviously not a team player and isn't as committed to winning as he says he is.

The Devils could try to trade Kovy along and get more for him. But I think they did OK for a rental.
