The Chicago Blackhawks have announce the signings of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith to multi-year contract extensions. Toews and Kane signed identical five-year contract extensions worth about $6.3 million per season. Meanwhile, Keith's deal is worth $72 million spread over a whopping 13 years at an annual average of $5.5 million. The Hawks currently sit just over $1.17 million under the NHL's mandated salary cap. ''Today is another great day in our franchise's decorated history,'' Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said. ''We've said all along that the plan was to keep our core together for a long time and Jonathan, Duncan and Patrick are a major part of that. This is a large step toward setting the Blackhawks up for long-term success as an organization.'' With all three players locked up long-term, the Blackhawks will likely be forced to make a trade or waive a player to free up 'tagging' cap space for next season. Names rumoured to be on the move include defencemen Brent Sopel and Cam Barker, with the Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly showing interest. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=300811

These signings put the Hawks over 60 mil for next year and they will still have spots to fill. I see Versteeg, Barker, Sopel and Sharp being dealt before the season is done.

Wow, Hossa and Keith for over a decade. Kind of pricy on the other two. I would have expected Getzlaf/Perry deals around $5M (more for Toews or less for Kane), but I guess Horcoff is the new $5.5M arbitration standard. lol
It's starting to look like anything over 5 years is a huge risk with a variable salary cap too.

Didn't they already try to waive Sopel? I'd love to have some of there lesser end talent on this team. It would be top line material.

Id take Versteeg or Sharp in a heartbeat. The Hawks have kind of pinned themselves in a corner. They need to shed salary and cant take any in return. Basically if they trade any players it will have to be for picks.

It didn't help them with that free agent screwup that cost them several million more than wanted to spend.

It didn't help them with that free agent screwup that cost them several million more than wanted to spend. But it helped the other 29 teams... ;D

So true...as good a team as they have I think in a couple years they may be in some troubles.

Campbell and Hossa's contract has fucked them, Maybe teams shouldn't run out and give certain free agents a ton of crash right a way all the time.

I've watched quite a few Chicago games this season, they're insanely good, the question mark is huet though, he lets in some real softies.
