Two years into his time in Denver, Ryan Smyth is on the move. The Colorado Avalanche have traded Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings for puck moving defencemen Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing and a fifth-round pick. The 33-year old posted 26 goals and 33 assists in 77 games last season. Smyth spent most of the first 12 seasons of his career with the Oilers, but after failing to reach a contract agreement, was dealt to the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in 2007. In that off-season he signed a five-year, $31.25 million deal with the Avalanche. Smyth, also know as Captain Canada for his long resume playing internationally for Canada, was invited to Canada's Olympic orientation camp set for the end of August. In 920 career games, Smyth has recorded 310 goals and 350 assists. Quincey finally got a shot to play on a regular basis and thrived last season, posting four goals and 34 assists. The 23-year old was stellar on the power-play where he notched 27 of his points. The 30-year old Preissing played 22 games for the Kings last season, recording 3 goals and 4 assists. The addition of Quincey should help the Avalanche offence, which had the lowest goal total of any team in the league last season, as well as their 25th ranked power play. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283667

Wow, kind of shocking. Mostly the part that LA wanted him. Wasn't Preissing a highly sought after UFA Dman last year or the year before?

Smtty is way over paid. I guess The Avs were desperate to find someone to take his contract. I heard rumours they were ging to trade them and LA is starting to look like Edmonton West Coast (Greene & Stoll)

True Stephen...Smyth is overpaid and this is a salary dump by the Avs. Rumors now that the Avs want Heatley, but I think thats just rumors.

Stastny (but he's already a $6.6M cap hit) Wolski Svatos Stewart McLeod
It would take at least those bottom 4 guys if not a dman instead of one of the last 2, but I doubt Colorado does that. Ottawa wants too much.

I just wonder now if Souray might still be traded to LA. At this point, I'd take some draft picks from them, at least a 1st rounder for next season's draft.
Maybe Smyth might help out the Kings but it'll be hard to say. I also wonder how he'll take to LA, since he considers himself a western boy. Maybe he'll take to the lifestyle there and decide that Alberta's too rustic now.

LA still has the cap space to take Souray, plus the fact that we would be getting some back in return. Johnson and a 1st round pick.

but if heatley wont waive his clause for the oil, he might for the avs. and if they are the only other guys interested then murray might have to trade him there.

I don't know if there's anything about Souray wanting to be traded. I can't see him signing a long contract here just to want to be moved. Trading him right now would be stupid anyway. He's one of our top 3 players and we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot if we traded him. Esp if Lubo goes down again.

Smyth will help out LA big time though. They're not missing the playoffs unless they're gonna be eternally chasing a legit goalie.

That is LA's problem. I can't really think that they ever had a legit goalie since Kelly Hrudey.
