McCartney Impresses But Oil Kings Start Season On Sour Note Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings know how to put on a show. It was non-stop fun for nearly 8 thousand fans from start to finish for Enmax Opening Night. The only setback was that the hockey team didn’t have as much fun after the game as they hoped after a solid effort but a disappointing 5 – 1 loss to the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers. It was an extremely tight game through 40 minutes and a quick goal for the Tigers to start the third period was enough for the visitors to take the momentum for good. “That’s the way we’re going to play, we’re going to be aggressive.” explained Oil Kings Head Coach Steve Pleau. “Whether or not we score a lot of goals, I don’t know, that remains to be seen. I certainly feel that if we work that hard, execute like that on the forecheck, if we’re that good in our d-zone for 40 minutes that there’s going to be nights where we’re rewarded for our effort.” Check out our brand new feature and listen to the entire Steve Pleau interview in our Audio Broadcasts section. You can find that as a drop down menu in the Multimedia section. The night started off with a terrific rendition of the national anthem from Hollywood recording artist Jesse McCartney. The 20 year old nailed it and sent thousands of young fans to their feet when he finished the final note. He really put on a show during both the first and second intermissions performing songs from all 3 of his albums including the latest 'Departure'. However, it was Tiger fans in attendance that had the first chance to cheer once the game started. Colton Grant scored the first goal of the season on a speedy Tigers rush up the ice where all 3 forwards played a key role in the play. Sean Ringrose started the play carrying the puck from his own zone to the Oil Kings blueline where he flipped it in for winger Bretton Cameron. His shot was stopped by Dalyn Flette but the rebound was neatly tucked home by a trailing Colton Grant. It was 1 nothing before the game was 5 minutes old. The Oil Kings bounced back before the period was through and it was only fitting that the game’s first goal was scored by their new co-captain Jeff Lee. It was a quick goal right after a Tigers’ turnover. Tomas Vincour fed it to a streaking Lee who was able to gather the puck from his skates to his stick and fire a quick snap shot all in one motion. Ryan Holfeld kicked out a big rebound and Lee tucked home the backhand for Edmonton’s first goal of the year. That’s a much better start for Lee who took 18 games to score his first of the year last season joining the team later in the season coming over from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2007 – 08. Medicine Hat would make it 2 – 1 just over 5 minutes into the second period when they enjoyed a potential full two minute, two man advantage. They only needed :39 seconds to score. Bretton Cameron pounced on a loose puck after a back door play to Tristan King that didn’t quite connect. The garbage goal turned out to be the game winner. Defenseman Mark Isherwood extended the lead 86 seconds into the final period and Zdenek Okal really put the game out of reach about halfway through the third. Matthew Konan rounded out the scoring for Medicine Hat. The Oil Kings won’t have time to dwell on this loss. They host the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night. Don’t forget it’s Magnetic Schedule Night. The first 5000 fans through the turnstiles at Rexall Place will get a free Toyota magnetic schedule for the fridge at home. Oil Kings Register First Win With Huge Comeback Edmonton, AB – What a dandy from the guy they call ‘Vandy’. Hulking defenseman Adrian Van de Mosselaer made his first multiple-point game in the WHL a memorable one with a 4 point night. He was a factor in all of the Oil Kings scoring in a 4 – 3 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen. The 212 pound Kelowna native had 4 helpers in Edmonton’s first victory of the season. The former stay-at-home, hard hitting defenseman was all smiles after the game. “It was a team effort tonight. We all came out to work. It started a little bit slow and we came in here after the second period and knew we had a job to do. We went out and battled and came out on top tonight.” Listen to the complete Adrian Van de Mosselaer interview on our new feature on oilkings.ca. Click on the Multimedia drop down menu and select Audio Broadcasts to hear what Adrian has to say. Van de Mosselaer is usually known for his hard hitting defense but he’s shown quite the offensive flare this season registering a 3 point game in the pre-season and now his first 4 point game of his career. “It’s just the way it turned out tonight. I’ve got to know my position and the kind of player I am but it was good to contribute tonight. We’ve got a long season ahead so we’ve got a lot to work towards.” It was a bit of an odd start for both teams with 2 penalties in the first 45 seconds of the game creating some 4 on 4 play in the early going. Edmonton took advantage of the extra space and turned it into an early lead. Adrian Van de Mosselaer let a howitzer go from the point that was tipped neatly by Brenden Dowd. The first of the year for the Oil Kings second leading goal scorer from last season made it 1 – 0. The Hitmen tied it up a few minutes later. The Oil Kings had some trouble in their own zone and turned the puck over behind the net. Saskatoon native Kyle Bortis threw the puck out front to Brandon Kozun who slid into the slot undetected and potted his second of the year. That made it 1 – 1 just over 4 and a half minutes into the game. Former Oil Kings tough guy Brennan Sonne’s little brother Brett is off to a great start to his 4th full season in the WHL. He picked up his 4th point of the year in just his second game when he set up Ian Schultz for a one-timer in the slot. It was 2 – 1 Calgary heading into the intermission even though Edmonton was leading on the shot clock 13 – 11. The Hitmen are launching to the top of the special teams stats in a hurry. Their powerplay connected in the second period when Brandon Kozun roofed a rebound past a sprawling Dalyn Flette. The Oil Kings goalie who calls Calgary home in the off-season made a nice first save off of Scott Maetche but nobody could corral the rebound. Sonne picked up his second assist of the game and it was 3 – 1 after 40 minutes. The Oil Kings were not going to let this game get away from them like they did 24 hours earlier against Medicine Hat. They battled back hard and the comeback was cued by a quick goal right out of the gate in the third period. Brenden Dowd buried a bit of a spin-o-rama goal right in front of the net. Van de Mosselaer picked up his second assist of the game to pull the Oil Kings to within one. They struck again just 61 seconds later. This time it was another blistering shot from Adrian Van de Mosselaer that made its way through traffic and behind Hitmen goalie Dan Spence. The goal was originally credited to Van de Mosselaer but he was quick to point out after the game that the puck actually deflected off Jeff Lee’s shin pad and past Spence. The goal was credited to the captain while Van de Mosselaer and Tomas Vincour picked up the assists. That knotted the game up at 3 apiece. You could see the ice start to slant in the Oil Kings favor and they kept pouring it on. A few minutes later, Brett Breitkreuz showed some nice hands in tight with some nifty stickhandling in front of the net. Van de Mosselaer was deep on the rush and made a nice play to centre the puck while Brenden Dowd started the whole play with a good cycle down low. So the Oil Kings split the opening weekend of the season and will try to keep it going for their first road game of the year on Wednesday night in Calgary for the second half of this home and home series with the Hitmen. The next home game at Rexall Place will be Friday night when the Red Deer Rebels are in town. It’s ‘Kids Eat Free’ night. The first 1000 kids ages 12 and under who come to the game will be able to eat for free and as much as they want! Don’t be late. Hitmen Powerplay Potent - Oil Kings Drop First Road Game Calgary, AB – Special teams can make you or break you in almost any level of hockey. It’s very early in the Western Hockey League season but the Calgary Hitmen are making a name for themselves scoring powerplay goals in bunches. That’s exactly how they beat the Edmonton Oil Kings in the second half of a home and home series against the Central Division rivals. A pair of powerplay goals were the difference as the Hitmen beat the Oil Kings 4 – 1 to split the season series at a game apiece. Nobody has scored more powerplay goals this season than the Calgary Hitmen. They added to their totals early in this hockey game to get things going. Chase Schaber showed some nice patience and waited for linemate Bostjan Golicic to catch up to the play. The perfect pass made for a tap-in re-direction past Calgary native Dalyn Flette. It was 1 – 0 just over 5 minutes into the game. The home team would add to their lead before the period was through. All 3 members of the Hitmen’s top line were in on the second goal that ended up with Kyle Bortis feeding Brett Sonne for a quick one-timer in the slot. Calgary took the 2 – 0 lead into the break and had the slight lead on the shot clock 9 – 8. The Oil Kings had a glorious chance about 2 minutes into the second period. The Hitmen defensemen were crossed up at their own blueline and turned the puck over, creating a 2 on nothing. Craig McCallum opted to shoot instead of pass and he completely missed the net in tight. Edmonton had some great goaltending from Flette in this game to keep it close. The best of the night came midway through the second period while the Hitmen were enjoying their third powerplay of the game. The same combo from Calgary’s second goal tried the one-timer again. This time Sonne was absolutely robbed with the flash of the leather from Flette with the shot coming from about the top of the circle. The Oil Kings finally got on the board with just over minutes to go in the second period. Brenden Dowd was the set up man on the play and looked off the defenseman long enough for Brett Breitkreuz to get into position for the perfect one-timer. The Springside, Saskatchewan native got all of the shot. His second goal in as many games made it 2 – 1. Adrian Van de Mosselaer picked up the second assist giving him 5 points in his last 2 games. Calgary got some breathing room back early in the third period with another powerplay goal. Edmonton had some trouble clearing their own zone. Too many players were leaving the zone without the puck which lead to a wide open Brandon Kozun in front of the net. The Hitmen sniper poked in his 4th of the year and it was 3 – 1. Ian Schultz added the insurance marker with the empty net goal with 1:57 to go to seal the deal. The Hitmen improve their record to 2-1-0-0 while the Oil Kings slip to 1-2-0-0. Next up for Edmonton will be a home and home series against the Red Deer Rebels this Friday and Saturday night. Don’t forget, it’s ‘Kids Eat Free’ night at Rexall Place Friday night. The first 1000 kids in the building will receive a wristband entitling them to eat free for the entire night and they’ll be able to eat as much as they want. Make sure you come early. Another Comeback - Oil Kings Win Shootout Thriller Over Red Deer Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings are getting good at these comebacks. For the second straight game at Rexall Place, they managed to erase a 3 goal deficit. This time, Brent Raedeke scored a late goal and Brenden Dowd scored the shootout winner as Edmonton records the 5 – 4 thriller over the Red Deer Rebels. Hard work and perseverance was definitely rewarded as Edmonton set a franchise record with 55 shots on the night. They didn’t get rattled after a rash of penalties to start the second period and rallied for their second win of the young season. “A game like this is hard on our guys.” explained Oil Kings Head Coach Steven Pleau “You go in after the second period and they’re down but you’ve got to stay positive. We were playing well. We were running the show. We had a good game plan that we were executing and yes we did take some penalties and they made us pay on the powerplay. But I thought on every other facet of the game, we were the better team.” “We don’t know if some of those calls went our way or not but we can’t use that as an excuse.” said Oil Kings alternate captain Shayne Neigum who tallied a goal and an assist. “We’ve got to battle for the full 60 no matter what. We had a good visit in the intermission as a team and we went to work in the third.” You can listen to the entire interview with Shayne Neigum on the new section on oilkings.ca. Click the Multimedia drop down menu and select Audio Broadcasts. The Oil Kings grabbed the early lead thanks to some pure determination from their top line of Brenden Dowd, Clayton Cumiskey and Brett Breitkreuz. They came at Rebels goalie Morgan Clark in waves and stormed the crease looking for a loose puck. Dowd eventually found one and stuffed in his third goal of the year to give Edmonton the 1 nothing lead. Dowd is on a 3 game point streak now with 3 goals and 2 assists in that span. The Rebels tied it up later in the first period when the Oil Kings had a little trouble clearing their zone. Rebels defenseman Colin Archer didn’t waste any time with his wrist shot from the point that made its way past a screened Dalyn Flette. It wasn’t a hard shot, but it was accurate enough to tie the game at one. The game unraveled a bit for the Oil Kings when a parade to the penalty box started at the end of the first period. Drew Nichol took a roughing minor at the end of the period which gave Red Deer a 5 on 3 powerplay to start the second period on fresh ice. Then Edmonton didn’t have much luck when Tyler Hlookoff’s clearing attempt sailed over the glass resulting in a delay of game penalty 6 seconds into the period. If that wasn’t unlucky enough, Adrian Van de Mosselaer took a cross-checking minor at the :20 second mark resulting in a lengthy 2 man advantage for the visitors. It took them 32 seconds to cash in. Tommi Kivisto’s point shot sailed well wide but the rebound off the end boards ended up right on the stick of William Coetzee. His second of the year made it 2 – 1. A minute and 13 seconds later, Cody Gross had some time and space in the slot to roof a wrist shot for another 5 on 3 powerplay goal. Then just another :42 seconds later, Cass Mappin buried his first of the season on the powerplay and all of a sudden, it was 4 – 1 Red Deer. The score stayed that way for a while even though the Oil Kings carried the play and were severely outshooting the Rebels for most of the game. Edmonton finally caught a break just over 6 minutes into the third period. Defenseman Brandon Lockerby made a nice play keeping the puck in the offensive zone and fired a high wrist shot on net that fooled Clark. Lockerby’s first of the season from Rhett Rachinski and Shayne Neigum gave the home team the extra boost they needed. A few minutes later, the Oil Kings scored one of the nicest goals of the season that was the result of a sweet passing play. Tyler Hlookoff made a nice play to keep the puck in at the point. Brenden Dowd followed that with a terrific backhand pass to Clayton Cumiskey in the slot. Cumiskey zipped a pass to Shayne Neigum for a tap-in goal on the doorstep. That made it 4 – 3. The tying goal came on a nice rush. Tomas Vincour chipped the puck into the offensive zone for Jeff Lee who looked like he was going to cycle the puck all the way behind the Rebels net. He fooled everybody by centering the pass, short-side and spotted a wide open Brent Raedeke who found the 5-hole on Morgan. Raedeke’s first of the year set the stage for overtime and eventually the shootout. In the shootout, Landon Ferarro and Craig McCallum traded goals to start the showdown. Tomas Vincour roofed his shot to give the Oil Kings the edge. The Rebels Brennan Wray responded by tucking one through the 5-hole of Flette. Brenden Dowd made a nice deek and tucked a backhand on the 5-hole of Clark for the game winner. The exciting win improves the Oil Kings record to 2-2-0-0 on the season. The busy weekend continues with the second half of the home and home series with the Rebels Saturday night in Red Deer. That’ll be followed up by a game in Cranbrook against the Kootenay Ice to finish off a 4 game in 5 night stretch. The next home game is set for a Friday October 3rd. It’s Mullet Night at Rexall Place. The first 2500 fans will receive a free mullet when they come to the game. Don’t be late. Comeback Falls Just Short In Red Deer Red Deer, AB - Relying on comebacks for victories is not the greatest strategy. However, coming up with one on the road to earn a point in overtime is not such a bad thing either. The Edmonton Oil Kings rallied from a 2 goal deficit with a pair of goals in the third period to squeak into overtime only to fall victim to a powerplay goal as the Rebels salvaged a 4 - 3 win in Red Deer. The victory for the Rebels also split the home and home series between the two clubs this weekend. Neither team showed signs of fatigue after playing extra time the night before. A day after the Oil Kings recorded a franchise record 55 shots on goal, they picked up where they left off firing 14 shots in the opening frame of Saturday night's contest but were unable to solve Rebels netminder Morgan Clark. Dalyn Flette was sharp at the other end for Edmonton considering he was making his 5th consecutive start. He made 11 saves in the opening 20 minutes as the teams headed to the first break with no goals up on the board. Red Deer opened the scoring just :37 seconds into the middle frame. Cass Mappin finished off a nice 2 on 1 and beat Dalyn Flette low to the blocker side after a nice feed from Tomas Polak. Mappin's second of the year gave the home team the early edge. The Oil Kings can finally shake the dubious distinction of being the only team in the WHL yet to score a powerplay goal. They broke out of their funk on their 22nd attempt of the year. Tomas Vincour knocked in first of the year after a nice cross-crease pass from line mate Jeff Lee. Brent Raedeke also picked up an assist on the 5 on 3 powerplay. That tied the game at one. The Rebels replied with a powerplay of their own. 19-year old Cody Gross was working the back end of the Rebels powerplay unit and he was able to step into a point shot that founds it's way through a maze of players in front of Dalyn Flette. It was 2 - 1 after two periods. Red Deer would add to that lead just over 6 minutes into the third. Tyler Penny took over after an Oil Kings turnover and took a shot from a bad angle that made its way past a couple of back-checkers and deflected high in a hurry beating Flette on the short side. That made it 3 - 1 but the Oil Kings will never give up. About midway through the third period, the Rebels turned the puck over in their own zone. Oil Kings leading scorer Brenden Dowd made a quick pass over to Clayton Cumiskey who was driving hard to the net. The Abbotsford, BC native snapped a quick shot home for his first of the year. It was 3 - 2 with lots of time left. Edmonton pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and tied it in the dying seconds. Rookie Mark Pysyk started the play by keeping the puck alive in the offensive zone. Brett Breitkreuz took the first crack at the loose puck in the slot and Brenden Dowd managed to jam home a rebound for the equalizer. The co-captain for the Oil Kings is off to a fabulous start with a 4 game point streak and he already has 4 goals and 4 assists in his first 5 games. The turning point in the game came in the dying seconds of regulation. Edmonton didn't want anything to do with overtime and were pressing hard for the winner before the final buzzer. They were a little too enthusiastic when Brent Raedeke came flying through the slot and tripped up a Rebel defender. The Oil Kings would have to start overtime shorthanded and killing off a 4 on 3 powerplay is always tough. It took Red Deer :51 seconds of extra time to seal the deal. Willie Coetzee tried to set up Brennen Wray for a backdoor play. He was stopped. Flette tried to pokecheck the rebound but Landon Ferarro pounced on the loose puck and tucked in the game winning goal off the cross-bar and in. The Rebels have picked up 4 of a possible 6 points in overtimes and shootouts this season. That was the first game this season decided in overtime this year for the Oil Kings. Edmonton's record stands at 2 - 2 - 1 - 0 and their hectic schedule wraps up Sunday night in Cranbrook. Their game against the Ice will be their 4th game in 5 nights. The next home game for the Oil Kings is Friday October 3rd. It's Mullet Night! The first 2500 fans at Rexall Place will receive a free mullet when they come to the game. Don't be late. Oil Kings Hectic Weekend Ends With A Solid Win Cranbrook, BC - Welcome to the WHL Cam Lanigan. The 16 year old Calgary native made his first career start to spell off a busy Dalyn Flette. The rookie netminder made 25 saves as the Oil Kings stole a 2 – 1 win in Cranbrook against the Kootenay Ice. The win caps off a hectic stretch that saw the Oil Kings play 4 games in 5 nights and picked up an impressive 5 out of a possible 8 points. The first goal of the game came just over 23 minutes into the contest. Craig McCallum snapped his 5 game goal-less drought with his first of the season from Brenden Dowd and Shayne Neigum. Dowd is now the leading scorer in the WHL with 9 points in 6 games and is riding a 5 game point streak. Neigum's heating up with 3 points in his last 3 games as well. The Ice would respond with a powerplay goal in the late stages of the second period. Andrew Bailey scored his first of the year from John Negrin and Brayden McNabb. The Oil Kings only managed 10 shots on goal through 40 minutes. Luckily the Ice weren't generating much either with just 19 shots on goal at that point. That set up the exciting and somewhat controversial finish. Andrew Bailey was sent to the box for a delay of game penalty just over 8 minutes into the final period. The referees and linesmen had a conference to discuss the play and ruled that Bailey's clearing attempt did not hit anyone, placing the Oil Kings on their third powerplay of the game. Brent Raedeke turned out to be the hero with the shot from the slot that beat Ice goalie Nathan Lieuwen. Mark Pysyk and Tomas Vincour picked up the assists while Raedeke stretches his point streak to 3 games. With the win, the Oil Kings record improves to 3-2-1-0 and they vault back up into a tie for first place in the Central Division with the Red Deer Rebels. Edmonton returns home for a couple of well deserved nights off. They'll have a rare mid-week 1 game road trip to Saskatoon on Wednesday night before returning to the friendly confines of Rexall Place this Friday. It's Mullet Night versus the Kamloops Blazers. Oil Kings Raedeke Signs Pro Contract Edmonton, AB - Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has signed 18 year old Edmonton Oil Kings centreman Brent Raedeke. The Regina native becomes the second Oil King in modern franchise history to sign a pro contract following in the footsteps of Robin Figren who inked a deal earlier this summer with the New York Islanders. Raedeke recently attended the Red Wings' prospect camp in Traverse City, Michigan and played a couple of inter-squad games at Detroit's main training camp. He impressed enough to sign a 3 year entry-level deal effectively taking him off the open market. "It feels really good to get it out of the way." said Raedeke "Now I can kind of focus on just playing hockey. I had mixed emotions not getting drafted but I couldn't have asked for a better situation going to Detroit. They liked the way I played so it couldn't have worked out any better." "We're really happy for Brent." said Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green "I know he was a little disappointed that his name wasn't called this summer at the Entry Draft in Ottawa but it's turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Having a solid camp with Detroit and then signing his first pro contract is the product of a lot of hard work, especially this off-season. You can see the focus in his game already." As the behind-the-scenes story goes, a number of teams expressed interest in Brent in the weeks leading up to the draft and apparently he was very close to being the final pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The rest is history. Raedeke has been back with the team for 4 games now and is full of confidence. "I think it's going to help. Playing at that level and playing at that tournament (in Traverse City), being on the ice with a bunch of the NHL guys really boosts your confidence and really shows you what you need to do to get to the next level. For this year, I just want to take that confidence and use it to the best of my ability and do the best that I can." Raedeke already has 2 goals and an assist in 4 games with the Oil Kings since returning from the Red Wings training camp. He'll try to keep it going with a pair of games this week in Saskatoon Wednesday night and then back at home Friday night against the Kamloops Blazers. Don't forget, it's Mullet Night at Rexall Place. The first 2500 fans attending the game will receive a free mullet. www.oilkings.ca/hm/inside.php?id=345

Finding Ways To Win Saskatoon, SK – It’s turning into a pretty good week for Edmonton Oil Kings forward Brent Raedeke. He returned recently from his first professional training camp and brought back a freshly signed contract with the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings. He’s translated that confidence into a 4 game point streak including back to back game winning goals. Edmonton stopped a Saskatoon comeback and scored a pair of third period goals on their way to a 4 – 1 win over the Blades Wednesday night in Saskatoon. The first goal for the Oil Kings was simply a product of hard work and an aggressive forecheck. Canoe Narrows, Saskatchewan native Craig McCallum did it all himself. He was the first Edmonton attacker into the Blades zone, shook of a check, stole the puck behind the net and walked out front for a bad angled shot and scored. It was 1 nothing just over 4 minutes into the game. Edmonton would extend their lead before the period was through. Jeff Lee scored a beauty, top shelf, on a partial breakaway that started at the Blades blue line. Craig McCallum picked up his second point of the night and Adrian Van de Mosselaer added an assist. The powerplay goal gave the Oil Kings a 2 nothing lead after 20 minutes. Rookie goalie Cam Lanigan was the story in the second period for the Oil Kings. The 16 year old Calgary native was making his second straight start after veteran Dalyn Flette started the first 5 games for Edmonton. Lanigan was busy in the middle stanza and was sensational early when the Blades were enjoying a lengthy 2-man advantage. The first year goalie made 18 saves in the middle stanza to give his team a chance at the win. Saskatoon thought they had their first goal of the game about 4 minutes into the period. A 2 on 1 finished with a shot that bounced off Lanigan, deflected up in the air and off the chest or arm of Blades forward Curtis Hamilton and in the net. The referee immediately waved it off and ruled it no goal. Close call for the Blades. The home team finally broke their goose egg in the 33rd minute. Vegreville’s Chris Langkow opted to stay out for a long shift. His line mates went off for a change but he stayed on the ice which turned out to be a good move on his part. His shot from the top of the circle beat Lanigan up high. The powerplay goal made it 2 – 1. They were just in the middle of announcing that goal when Burke Gallimore lead another rush for Saskatoon and just fired a quick shot on net. Lanigan wasn’t quite ready for it and it beat him low on the glove side. Two goals just :16 seconds apart knotted things up at 2 goals apiece through 2 periods of play. That set up the heroics from the Oil Kings top line late in the third period. Jeff Lee spotted a streaking Raedeke who was cutting through the middle. Raedeke got a quick shot away in the high slot and was able to beat Blades goalie Braden Holtby on the far side. Tomas Vincour picked up the second assist and the Oil Kings had the lead with just 3:45 to go. Saskatoon would pull the goalie for the extra attacker but Edmonton did a good job of clearing the defensive zone. Tomas Vincour was able to chip the puck past the Blades defense and set up Jeff Lee for the empty netter to make the final score 4 – 2. Edmonton’s record improves to an impressive 4-2-1-0. They’ve picked up 7 out of 8 points in their last 4 games and find themselves at the top of the Central Division with 9 points. The Oil Kings return home after this brief 1 game road trip to Saskatoon for Mullet Night this Friday against the Kamloops Blazers. The first 2500 fans to the game will receive a free mullet. Winning Streak Snapped With Home Loss To Kamloops Edmonton, AB - You can't come back every night. The Edmonton Oil Kings who rallied for wins the last 2 games played at Rexall Place, couldn't come up with another comeback. A poor start cost them a 5 - 2 decision at the hands of the visiting Kamloops Blazers. Salmon Arm, BC native Tyler Shattock lead the visitors with a 3 point night while Jimmy Bubnick added a pair of goals as Kamloops avenged a 4 nothing shutout in Kamloops in the only matchup between the two clubs last season. "They played hard and we didn't, end of story." said Oil Kings veteran Brett Breitkreuz. "We didn't come ready to play and they outworked us in the early going and there's no excuses." "It's just unacceptable." stated Oil Kings' Assistant Coach Rocky Thompson. "For 35 minutes on the ice tonight,we were non-existent. We didn't even show up. We weren't competing, we weren't battling. We were just out for a Sunday skate with no passion at all. It's just very disappointing to see." Listen to the entire interview with Rocky Thompson by visting the new section on the website, Multimedia, then choose the dropdown menu for Audio Broadcasts. The Kamloops Blazers came out with some jump and it didn't help that the Oil Kings took a delay of game penalty less than a minute into the game. The Blazers were able to generate some shots and some momentum and turned it into a 1 nothing lead through the first 20 minutes. Edmonton native Brendan Ranford set up Jimmy Bubnick for a one-timer in the slot that beat goalie Dalyn Flette for the game's first goal. Ranford is the nephew of former Oilers' goalie Bill Ranford and the 16 year old sniper also won the Alberta Midget AAA scoring title in the AMHL with the Edmonton Canadiens last year racking up 33 goals and 46 assists for 79 points in just 35 games. The Oil Kings only managed a season low 3 shots on goal in the opening period. The hole grew deeper early in the second period. Edmonton was enjoying a powerplay to start the period but were having trouble breaking out of their own zone. A couple of defensemen got tangled up in their own slot. Blazers' penalty killer Tyler Shattock pounced on the loose puck, lost it momentarily, re-gained control and had enough presence of mind to flip a back hand past Flette. The shorthanded goal made it 2 nothing. The Blazers would stretch their lead to 3 with a goal from C.J. Stretch. This time Tyler Shattock was the set-up man with the nice pass to Stretch for another one-timer from the slot. Kamloops was in complete control outshooting the Oil Kings 14 - 4. Oil Kings Head Coach Steve Pleau opted to pull starting goalie Dalyn Flette but only for a few shifts. He was back in to finish the second period and it seemed as if the message was sent. Edmonton would finally get on the board thanks to a powerplay of their own. Brett Breitkreuz hammered home a one-timer for his third goal of the season. Both defensemen, Brandon Lockerby and Adrian Van de Mosselaer earned the assists. It was 3 - 1 with about 24 minutes left to play. Things were looking better at the start of the third period. The Oil Kings had some jump and didn't even allow a Kamloops shot until midway through the period. Unfortunately, one of the first couple of shots that the Blazers generated, went in. Jimmy Bubnick fought off a check and roofed a wrist shot high on the far side. Bubnick's second of the game and third of the season made it 4 - 1. The Oil Kings did manage to get one back with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker. Brended Dowd chipped one in after a scramble in front of the net. Jeff Lee and Brandon Lockerby picked up the helpers. That made it 4 - 2 with 1:42 to play. Tyler Shattock capped off his 3 point night with the empty net goal to make the final score 5 - 2. Edmonton's record slips to 4-3-1-0 while the Kamloops Blazers climb back up to the .500 mark with a record of 3-3-0-1. Next up for the Oil Kings will a quick trip to Medicine Hat on Wednesday night. The next home game is Friday October 10th when the Saskatoon Blades make their first trip into Rexall Place this season. World Hot Dog Eating Champ Joey Chestnut will be at the game to show off his skills.
