Oil Kings Trade A Defenceman - Three 20-Year-Olds Remain
Edmonton, AB - Edmonton Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green announced today that the club has traded overage defenceman Cameron Cepek and a 6th round bantam draft pick to the Prince George Cougars for a 3rd round pick in the 2009 Bantam draft pick.
"We'd like to thank Cameron for all of his efforts over the course of his Oil Kings' career." said Green. "It's always a tough decision when you have an abundance of solid 20 year olds and you're only allowed to carry three. It's a great opportunity for Cam to be a great leader on another young hockey team and further his career. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
Cepek is entering his 5th and final year in the Western Hockey League and was originally an expansion draft pick of the Oil Kings coming over from the Portland Winter Hawks organization.
The 7th round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2006 NHL entry draft played 58 games for the Oil Kings last year and finished 7th in team scoring with 7 goals and 18 assists for 25 points to go along with 119 penalty minutes.
"I was shocked, that's for sure." said Cepek. "I was looking to come back here and be a leader on this team.I have to look at it as a good opportunity for me though. I'll be going back to the Western Conference and I know their roster a bit.I'll just have to go and show that I'm a good leader and play well enough to earn a pro contract for next year."
The three overage players left on the Oil Kings' roster include Breden Dowd, Brandon Lockerby and Jeff Lee.
Cepek will get a chance to play against his former teammates when the Cougars make their first visit to Rexall Place on October 17th.
The next action for the Oil Kings will be their annual pre-season game in Leduc against the Red Deer Rebels. Puck drop at the Black Gold Arena on Tuesday night will be 7 o'clock.
Tickets are on sale through Leduc Minor Hockey and a limited number will be available at the door.
