One day after adding defenseman Mark Streit in an effort to get more offense from the blue line, the New York Islanders signed playmaking center Doug Weight in an effort to generate more goals up front.
Weight, 37, brings a total of 1,131 NHL games to Long Island. He has 265 career goals and 704 assists for 969 points in 16 seasons. He's fifth in assists and eighth in points among U.S.-born players, and is eighth among active players in assists and 12th in points.
Weight split last season between St. Louis and Anaheim and finished with a total of 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 67 games.
"Bringing Doug aboard was a priority for us. He not only brings a wealth of NHL games and experience with him, but he's the type of player we want our younger players to learn from," Isles GM Garth Snow said.
Weight's best season came in 1995-96, when he had 79 assists and 104 points for the Edmonton Oilers. He won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, scoring 16 points in 23 games.
Weight has played on the United States Olympic Team twice, in 1998 and 2002, and also represented the United States in the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and 2004. Among his Olympic teammates on both occasions was Islanders captain Bill Guerin. The two were also teammates with the Oilers, with Guerin often playing right wing on Weight's line.
The Islanders also signed goalie Yann Danis, who played last season with Montreal's AHL team in Hamilton, to a one-year, two-way deal. Denis, who went 11-19-4 this past season with a 3.28 goals-against average, will get a chance to compete with Joey MacDonald for the backup job behind starter Rick DiPietro. He has a 3-2-0 record in six NHL games with Montreal, all in 2005-06.
On Tuesday, the Islanders signed Streit, 30, to a five-year contract. Streit played in 81 games for Montreal in 2007-08 and scored 13 goals with 49 assists for 62 points. A specialist on the power play, Streit scored seven goals with 27 assists for 34 points on the man advantage.
"Mark was someone we targeted from the beginning and we're thrilled he's an Islander," said Snow, whose team finished 29th on the power play this past season. "Mark provides us with the stability on the blue line that we were looking for."
A native of Englisberg, Switzerland, Streit is a veteran of 205 NHL games and has scored 25 goals and 84 assists for 109 points. Much of that production has come on the power play — he has 11 goals and 45 assists for 56 points with the man advantage.
Last season, Streit finished tied for 11th in the NHL in power play scoring and finished tied for second among defensemen.
Streit was originally drafted by Montreal in the ninth round (No. 262 overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
