Beckham could be a force in MLS, only because of the weaker talent. Apart from the free kicks, he was overrated and benefited more from being on teams with lots of money and talent.

He wants to have the status of Gretzky and Jordan. Maybe he should have picked a better sport.

He wants to have the status of Gretzky and Jordan. Maybe he should have picked a better sport. Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldinho? To name but a few. I would suspect that Gretzky and Jordan couldn't hold a candle in status compared to many of the soccer players out there. The $50 mil per year, I believe, includes endorsement deals, but it's still ridiculous. The impact though will probably be huge for the league and soccer in North America. The phone calls to the Toronto team for tickets against the Galaxy have been coming in constantly. Having Beckham in the league may also be the key to keeping talent in the MLS (guys like Adu who place for DC) The added focus should do a lot for the sport here, which is already growing.

If the Galaxy offered me a big contract I would sign it too. Hey they had Elizabth Shue's brother Andrew from Melrose Place on their team a few years back. But basically Beckham wants to be in a league he can actually look good in.

I doubt it will improve MLS's future, though. The NASL had Pele (and other big names) and still folded.

He wants to have the status of Gretzky and Jordan. Maybe he should have picked a better sport. soccer is the biggest sport in the world outside of North America. and it's quickly gaining popularity in NA too.

It will never take off in the US. No one cares past age 12 about soccer really.

Soccer is gaining rapidly in popularity and there's part of the difference. I don't know what the stats are today, but in Canada youth Soccer registrations surpassed youth hockey registrations (yearly totals) many years ago. Your fanbase starts with youth.
