The Philadelphia Flyers fired head coach John Stevens and replaced him with former Stanley Cup winner Peter Laviolette, Sportsnet has confirmed. The Flyers received permission Friday morning from 'Canes GM Jim Rutherford to speak with Laviolette. Laviolette was fired by the Hurricanes last December after coaching the club for 4 1/2 seasons, and winning the Cup in 2006. Stevens took over for Ken Hitchcock in 2006. www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/12/04/flyers_head_coach/

Beat me to it Jay. Just heard it on the news. Flyers have a lot of expectations this year, but have struggled of late. I guess not a surprise, but I think they pulled the trigger too quick here.

I dont see the Flyers looking at MacT. Hes a defensive style coach, much the same a Hitch was, so I cant see them going that route.

I haven't been following the situation in Philly but I wonder if the team panicked and pulled the chute. I mean it's only about 25 games in and the Flyers were 3 games above fake .500.

LOL...I think MacT may be destined to be a TSN analyst and Spengler coach.

I don't know, I always liked the guy, but I couldn't comprehend his line up combinations and treatment. He also seems to be a guy sticking up for the Oilers on the panel. I'm still waiting intently for "The Quiz" question where he finally grabs McGuire by the neck and lifts him above the panel desk.

LMAO...now that would be great.
I dont think that the guys on those panel are allowed to openly critisize the players or coaches nevermind a team that they coached.

Just watching the CBC intermission and they mentioned something about a 9 minute PP against the Flyers. 2nd worst coaching debut ever. First placegoes to.....the Oilers. Didn't catch the name, but another loser record we also hold.
